Escondido – June 1, 2008 – In response to the government-imposed $4.8 billion cut in California school funding, American Rose Theatre of San Diego leads the way in combating the demise of California arts programs by establishing the ‘Lucky Break’ Scholarship Program.

A free public school education is guaranteed by the state Constitution to every California child. But as districts grapple with proposed state funding cuts that could cause the layoffs of thousands of teachers and inflate class sizes – music, art, and theater programs are in great jeopardy.

“Public education is free, but an excellent public education is not free at this point,” said Janet Berry, president of the Davis Schools Foundation, which recently launched the Dollar-a-Day campaign, urging citizens of the city near Sacramento to donate $365 per child, grandchild or student acquaintance.

“A well-rounded education is the most valuable asset for present and future generations; the arts are a vital part of education. Achieving it requires a strong commitment from everyone in the community,” said Diane Dunaway, American Rose Theatre Producer. “Our goal is to get the community involved in funding a musical and theatrical experience for underprivileged San Diego youths, and to reward those individuals and companies who do so through community exposure and support.”

Designed to serve as both an educational and fun experience, the ‘Lucky Break’ Scholarship Program places underprivileged young actors under the direction and mentorship of six professional actors. Subsequently these youths are professionally coached on the foundations of musical theatre and then have the opportunity to perform in one or both of ART’s summer productions: ‘The Music Man’ and ‘Li’l Abner.’

American Rose Theatre has established pre-set sponsor levels which can be viewed on http://www.americanrosetheatre.com, however any and all donations are accepted and appreciated. The American Rose Theatre is a nonequity 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2003 for the purpose of creating and producing performing arts to serve San Diego’s North County and surrounding communities. All donations are tax-deductible.
